Genre: Fantasy Romance
Series: Book 1
Heatness Level: Moderate
After three long years of war, starkly handsome Wynter Atrialan will have his vengeance on Summerlea’s king by taking one of the man’s beautiful, beloved daughters as his bride. But though peace is finally at hand, Wynter’s battle with the Ice Heart, the dread power he embraced to avenge his brother’s death, rages on.
Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of Storms, has spent her life exiled to the shadows of her father’s palace. Reviled by her father, marriage to Wintercraig’s icy king was supposed to be a terrible punishment, but instead offers Kham her first taste of freedom—and her first taste of overwhelming passion.
As fierce, indomitable Wynter weathers even Khamsin’s wildest storms, surprising her with a tenderness she never expected, Kham wants more than Wynter’s passion—she yearns for his love. But the power of the Ice Heart is growing, dangerous forces are gathering, and a devastating betrayal puts Khamsin and Wynter to the ultimate test.
In this world we meet the Weathermages of Mystral. This is Book 1 of the series but can be read as a standalone. There is no cliffhanger. We meet Khamsin aka Storm whose weathergift is to manipulate storms. She grew up as an outcast for reasons I won’t reveal in this review. Khamsin was a great heroine. She was the unloved, the loner and yet she had such a fierce spirit. She was stubborn and did not run away from any challenge. She rebelled against rules and conformity and other people’s expectations of her.
Khamsin is one of the daughters of the Summerlea King and she has been called into an unwanted marriage to Wynter, King of Wintercraig. Khamsin has heard the stories of the cold hearted Wynter who slaughtered women and children during a war where he seeked revenge for his brother’s death. However as she and Wynter draw closer, she learns that there is an underlying tenderness to this man that so many fear. The literal thawing of Wynter’s heart as he fell in love with Khamsin gave me all the feels, despite him fighting it all the way.
I will say the chemistry between these characters was fantastic. Compared to the Tarien Soul series, the hotness level in this book when up a few points. While I loved the connection these two had, I was frustrated by how easily Wynter believed Khamsin betrayed him because of the lies of others. I know he had his trust issues because of his past but I wished he didn’t wait till basically the end of the book to fully trust her. Nevertheless, their passion will speak for itself.
The worldbuilding was good, not great. The suspense in this story will keep you on edge. There are twists and turns and betrayal at every corner. The We are introduced to the Prince of Calberna, the Sea King who I am absolutely excited to read about in Book 2.
Overall a great fantasy romance that I read quite quickly despite it being 600 pages. It reads fast and hooks you in.
