Book Review | The Birthday List by Devney Perry

birtdayHappily married to her college sweetheart, Poppy lived a blessed life with the husband of her dreams. Then everything changed. She is no longer a wife. She is no longer the envy of her single friends. Now, people look at her with pity as they whisper a single word behind her back.

Years after her husband’s tragic death, years of pain and sorrow and wishing for the life she’ll never get back, Poppy decides to finish Jamie’s birthday list. She’ll do the things he wanted to most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can complete his list, she can start to live again.

Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who delivered the news of her husband’s death and shattered her heart be the one to help her put it back together again?

I loved this small town romance that starts off with devastation and heartache and ends with a feel good love story that put me in emotional overload!

Poppy, Pretty Poppy! Can we all agree that is a brilliant name for a small town heroine. Anyway, she gets the most devastating news at the beginning of the book that her husband, Jaime is dead. The story then fast forwards a few years and she is still struggling to cope with his death but she is trying to move forward. At this time she coincidentally meets up again with Cole, the police officer who delivered the news of her Jaime’s death.

What comes after is the sweetest slow burn romance! With Cole, Poppy comes alive again. She struggles with the guilt of moving on with another man but Cole is so patient and understanding. This guy! The best way for me to describe Cole is that he is one of the “good guys”. He is not a domineering alpha but he he is confident and self assured. He is handsome and sexy and his passion for Poppy was so intense. His need for her was so potent but he held back to give her the space she needed. I had all the FEELS as the romance between these two blossomed!

Poppy’s husband had a birthday list, sort of like a bucket ist and she is determined to fulfill his list for him. Cole offers to help her out and I loved that he encouraged Poppy to talk about Jaime. He never wanted her to forget him. We also get an added layer of suspense to the story as Cole investigates Jaime’s death.

I just loved how effortless this love story seemed to come together. This book was so easy and enjoyable to read. I never wanted it to end and even though we got a great epilogue, I still want more of Cole and Poppy. Top recommendation from me for this one!
