The story of the heart can never be unwritten.
Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.
But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.
Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.
PLEASE FORGIVE THE SCREAMING BUT THIS BOOK HAD ME FEELING EVERYTHING!!! It was so beautifully written and this love story was SO SWEET, SO PURE and SO POWERFUL! The story flips from the past to present and was comprised of my favorite tropes. It was a friends to lovers and second chance and there was a bit of a love triangle but that didn’t dominate the story.
Elliot and Macy’s relationship was founded on a solid friendship with an intense connection. They were each other’s everything before romance even came into the picture. I love these stories of young love as the characters are not only discovering love but discovering who they are as individuals. There is a lot of pain and heartache and at times my heart became overwhelmed with the weight of my emotions. This book is light on the sexy but there are a few amazing scenes and what I appreciated even more was the sexual anticipation that lingered for so long before anything happened.
I have no words to describe Eliot! Every girl needs an Eliot in their life. As a boy he was considered a bit nerdy but so sweet and sensitive. He was so in tuned to Macy’s needs and wants. He grew out of his awkwardness and as a man he was downright sexy but his thouhtful and kind nature remained intact. As I said, there is a bit of a love triangle as Macy is engaged to another man when she accidentally runs into Eliot again. However, please trust me, there is no over the top drama here. There was so much more to this story.
We don’t find out why Eliot and Macy broke up as teenagers till the end of the book and I kind of felt like I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened. This was such a page turner for me. I JUST COULD NOT PUT THIS DOWN! These characters were so complex and the level of emotions in this book just about crushed me! This is one of my favorite reads this year! I highly, highly recommmend.
