Book Review |How to Love a Duke in Ten Days (Devil You Know #1) by Kerrigan Byrne

love a duke

These men are dark, bold, and brave. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees…

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for to herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past—one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

Oh my gosh! This one made me laugh and swoon and reminded me why I love historical romances. This is the first book in a series that will follow three strong and sharp witted red heads who are best friends that made a pact to protect each other’s secrets. This is Alexandra’s story.

Piers and Alexandra enter into a marriage of convenience and I guess you have to call it insta-love since they fell in love in ten days but honestly it didn’t feel like it. They had amazing chemistry but this was so much more than lust.

It’s a bit of a beauty and the beast retelling with Piers being scarred by a panther and looked upon by others as a scary and disfigured. He was even given the title of “The Terror of Torcliff”. Alaxandra saw past his scars and was actually quite besottted by his powerful male essence. The Duke was a tall, rather large and imposing man and given Alexandra’s unfortunate and horrific history, she should have been afraid of him. However, Piers becomes her protector and Alexandra discovers to her amazement that she is able to care deeply for a man despite her history of sexual trauma.

Alexandra had so much strength but she still held back from trusting Pier’s completely. This led to so much misunderstanding and heartbreak. Even when Pier’s felt Alexandra betrayed him, he still couldn’t help but want to love and protect her. His need to claim her as his own was so romantic and so hilarious when we see his fits of jealousy when he acted out like a school boy to show other men she belonged to him.

Secrets of the past come out and we get mystery, suspense and danger as Pier’s and Alexandra’s lives are threatened several times. There are also twists in the plot that kept the story interesting. This was just a wonderfully romantic story that had moments of heartbreak but also of healing and love. Really looking forward to Cecelia’s and Francessca’s books.
